SUPPLEMENTS


Supplementing can be used in two ways. Firstly, being essential to one's health, eg: in states of severe deficiency, increased need (eg: pregnancy) or illness. Secondly as an adjunct therapy to further promote good health.

Supplements are available for pretty much anything these days. There are protein powders and capsules, vitamins, minerals, herbs, hormones, trace minerals, homoeopathics and many other phytonutrients. There are supplements for pets as well as humans, for athletes and convalescing people, the list goes on and on. Whatever you are looking for, chances are, you'll find it!

Supplementation is becoming increasingly popular within our society due to peoples growing concerns about their on-going health, coupled with nutritionally depleted soils, and therefore foods. It is also popular due our ever increasing knowledge of the body's physiology, and the chemicals we can now reproduce to ensure our body performs at its peak (eg: in marathon running). Gone are the days when the body had to run on its own resources and nothing else!!

In fact, there are so many different supplements on the market these days, that without help from a professional, it really is a bit of a mine field out there. Take for example calcium. A look in any health food shop will show probably 5 - 15 different types - so which to choose?

Keep in mind that with supplements, you really do get what you pay for. There are many factors apart from value for money that one should keep in mind when deciding what to buy. Factors such as how well it will break down and therefore be absorbed, the type of ingredients used in its manufacture (eg: are you allergic to any of the 'add ins'). Do you really need it or did you overhear someone talking about how good it made them feel? Speaking to a health professional about such matters is a vital first step in ensuring that you are in fact getting your moneys worth. Also, do keep in mind that supplements are designed to give the user a health benefit. There are instances however where the opposite may be true. Again, always speak to your health professional before starting any new supplementation / health program.

OILS - FISH, FLAX, ETC


Oils are an essential part of life - without them, we cannot survive. They form an essential part of our structure, coating our brain, heart and nervous system; and lubricating our joints.

Most people supplement with oils as they provide us with a natural anti-inflammatory action, helping many diseases from ADHD to arthritis. Oils enhance mood and benefits are often quickly reported.

SPIRULINA + GREEN SUPPLEMENTS


Spirulina, and many other green foods are nutritionally abundant in many vitamins, minerals and other trace nutrients. Providing a rich source of protein, iron, beta-carotene, B12 and many other phyto-nutrients, they are becoming an increasingly popular supplement to our busy, modern day society. Providing instant energy and protein, green supplements such as spirulina are easily added to shakes or taken singularly as a shot for a nutritious pick me up.

GLUCOSAMINE + CHONDROITIN


Glucosamine supplements are also increasing in popularity. Aiding arthritic symptoms, providing pain relief, and helping to remodel joints after years of wear and tear, whether through the school of hard knocks, or after repeated sporting injuries. Glucosamine supplementation mimics our own natural compound by the same name found in healthy joints and cartilage.

ANTIOXIDANTS


With ever increasing pollution, stress and busier lifestyles, our bodies tend to be under a lot more pressure than those of our forefathers. Due to this, we naturally produce a lot more toxins within our bodies. Antioxidants help to 'clean' such toxins up. Think of antioxidants as your body's very own kamikaze pilots! They go in and attack the bad guys, often using themselves up in the process. Some do have the ability to 'recycle' themselves - eg: the presence of selenium allows vitamin E to be re-used. There are many vitamins and minerals that are referred to as antioxidants. Some include vitamins A, C and E and the minerals selenium and zinc, all of which perform different functions.

MAGNESIUM


Magnesium is involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions within our bodies, helping to maintain normal muscle and nerve control. No wonder so many people rave about the benefits of its supplementation! Magnesium helps promote a healthy level of blood pressure and blood sugar and as such is often recommended for use with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Many sports people supplement with magnesium to relieve cramping, especially after long distance events. It is considered the anti-stress mineral, promoting a more healthful and restful sleep.

CALCIUM


The most abundant mineral in the body, calcium is required for muscle contraction, for the secretion of hormones and enzymes and even for the healthy functioning of our nervous system. It is often used to treat and prevent musculoskeletal problems such as osteoporosis. Even though calcium forms a part of many of our common foods, people still choose to supplement. Often this is due to depleted soil levels, and concern for on-going health. As an example, if blood calcium levels drop below normal ranges, calcium will be taken from the bones and put into the blood in an attempt to restore levels. Thus it is vitally important (as with all our other necessary nutrients) to consume enough to maintain healthy body levels.

Always keep in mind that supplements are designed to enhance health, but without proper supervision, sometimes the opposite may be true. Always seek advice before beginning a supplementation program.
