Running Tips For Beginners.

Here we have put together some tips that other runners have found useful. If you have any tips that you would like to include just email them to us, and we'll add them.

  • Always run with a mobile phone.
  • Wear a peaked cap - it keeps the sun and the rain off your face, and if you run at night you can lower the visor to block out glaring car headlights.
  • Run with an MP3 player, but keep the volume down enough to hear cars, muggers, and rabid dogs approaching.
  • If you run through the bush take a length of elastic (wrapped loosely around your wrist, ankle, or waist) during summer. You don't want to wait until you've been bitten by a snake to discover your iPod headphones weren't designed for a tournique.
  • Wear gloves in winter. It's no good taking a phone (or even a house key) if you can't use your fingers.
  • Dress as though it is 10 degrees warmer. And don't wear any clothing that can't be tied around your waist or strapped to your body. If you feel cold - run faster!
  • Plan your run. Keep the distance and terrain proportional to your ability.
  • Use a heart-rate monitor. It helps you improve safely and efficiently, and gives you feedback about your progress.
  • Plan to improve. Aim to run and walk certain sections of your route, gradually increasing the speed or distance by about 10% every 4 or 5 sessions.
  • Use your imagination. When you're finding it tough, picture yourself nearing the finish line of a race with all your family and friends cheering you on.
  • Cross-train. Alternating your regular run with a longer hike or some cycling every once in a while benefits your running and keeps things interesting.
